He was particularly concerned about the widespread use and subsidy of public funds to private businesses and eminent domain. In 1995, he funded the publication “Redevelopment: The Unknown Government” as well as the formation of Municipal Officials for Redevelopment Reform. He also financed Fullerton Mayor Chris Norby’s 1995 book. Later, Norby served as a member of the California State Assembly. With Ahmanson’s strong support, redevelopment agencies were eliminated in 2011, and MORR was disbanded. It had succeeded in its sole purpose.

In 2002, the Ahmansons admitted they had an image problem and let the Orange County Register do a five-part series on them in 2004 to give the public a more accurate view of their work and beliefs.

Time magazine included the Ahmansons in their 2005 profiles of the 25 Most Influential Evangelicals in America, classifying them as “the financiers.”In the 1970s, Howard became a board member of the Chalcedon Foundation and served until 1996. In 1996, he said he had left the Chalcedon board due to the fact that he “did not embrace” all of the teachings held by its leadership.

Howard married Roberta Green in 1986. She supports him in his philanthropic endeavors, and has a special focus on visual art. She is involved in the Bridge Projects in Los Angeles, where she plays a more active role.
