Hovik Abrahamyan Biography

Hovik Abrahamyan is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on January 24, 1958 in Mkhchyan, Armenia. Armenian politician Hovik Arami Abrahamyan (Armenian, Hovik Argami Ibrahimyan; also known as Muk, born 24 Jan 1959) He was a former member of the Republican Party and served as the Prime Minister of Armenia between 13 April 2014 and 8 September 2016. He was previously the President of Armenia’s National Assembly.

In 2005, he was elected Minister of the Territorial Administration. This is the position that oversees the regional government structures. He served until 2008 when he resigned to become the head of President Serzh Sargsyan’s presidential staff. He was re-elected to the National Assembly in August 2008 in an uncontested election. He was elected in the fourth convocation as the seat vacant by Abrahamian’s older sister, Henrikto. In September 2008, he was elected President of the National Assembly of Armenia. In November 2011, he resigned from his position as president and was re-elected as a member of Republican Party of Armenia to the National Assembly on 5/6/2012. He opposed the asset declaration draft law his predecessor proposed that Armenian politicians and high-ranking public officials declare their business holdings.

Abrahamyan was born in Mkhchyan in Armenia’s Ararat Province. He began his professional career as the Burastan Brandy Factory department head in 1990 and then as the president at Artashat wine-brandy manufacturer. He was elected to the Armenian Parliament in 1995. In 1996, he was elected Mayor of Artashat and in 1998, he was appointed Governor of Ararat Province.

In 2008, the US Ambassador to Armenia Marie Yovanovitch also described Abrahamian to be a politician who uses political power to advance his business interests. There have been reports that he owns more than 20 companies, including three Araks river sandmines; 1,500 hectares in Artashat grape fields; more than 10 petrol stations outside Yerevan; one-third of “Ararat Cement”, casinos; petrol stations and a $7 million summer house in the Crimea. He was appointed as Prime Minister in April 2014 following the resignation of Tigran Sargsyan. Abrahamyan was nominated for the role of prime minister by President Serzh Sargsyan calling him a “very effective new prime minister.” He was congratulated by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.
