Hossein Baharvand is one of the most popular and richest Biologist who was born on February 25, 1972 in Isfahan, Iran. In 1995, he joined Royan Institute for the first time. He earned his B.Sc. He received his B.Sc. in Biology in 1994 from Shiraz University, and his M.Sc. in Biology in 1996 from Shahid Beheshti University, Tehran. In Developmental Biology, Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran in 1996. In 2004, he received his Ph.D. from Khwarizmi University, former Tarbiat Moallem University.
He has presented numerous tutorials and given invited talks at many congresses, such as ISSCR (2018). He is also the editor of four international books, which were published by Springer in 2010 and 2012 and John Wiley in USA (2015). He has published 354 and 102 international peer-reviewed papers as well as seven chapters in international textbooks, seven books in Persian and eight English text books. Eight pages from his peer-reviewed publications were chosen as the cover pages for international journals.
Google Scholar has over 9000 citations, h-index 47 and more than 9000 citations as of November 2018. He currently serves as an editor for eight international journals, including Journal of Biological Chemistry (e.g.) and Scientific Reports of Nature Publishing Group (e.g.). Two US patents have been granted to him based on his research. He has been awarded 30 national and international awards, including the 10th, 12th, and 17th annual Razi research awards on medical science hosted at Iran Ministry of Health and Medical Education, 26th Khwarizmi International Awards (2013), hosted in Iran Ministry of Science, Research and Technology, 27th Annual Book of the Year of the Islamic Republic of Iran (2010), Academy of Medical Sciences of Iran’s Award in 2010, 2014, International Prof. Yalda award for excellence in Medical Sciences (2015), and distinguished Iranian scientist, in Biotechnology (2015) and genetics (2016). He was awarded the Islamic Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization’s (ISESCO) Prize in Biology Research (2010). He was also introduced as a Prominent Professor during the 3rd term Allameh Tabatabaei’s Award hosted in Iran by Vice Presidency for Science and Technology and Presidency and National Elite Foundation (2014). He was awarded the 2014 United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO- Equatorial Guinea International Prize for Research in the Life Sciences. His stem cell research and many applications in regenerative medical medicine have made him the most outstanding recipient of the prize. He was also nominated for the NICHE 2017 Stem Cell Person of the Year Award. He was also awarded the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), prize in Biology for his fundamental contributions to understanding how pluripotency, differentiation, and stem cell maintenance.

He generated embryonic stem cells in mouse and human embryos (2003), and induced pluripotent stem cell (8) in Iran for the first time. His team has been able to explore many avenues of research in translational research and regenerative medicines. His research interests have been focused on the improvement of translational research and regenerative medicines, primarily through the understanding and application of Stem Cells, Developmental Biology, and Biologically inspired engineering. His research interests include transdifferentiation of pluripotent stem cells into neural cells, cardiomyocytes and hepatocytes. He is also interested in germ cell biology and the pluripotency mechanism. He has made numerous contributions to clinical trials, tissue-specific stem cells transplantation, and cell manufacturing.
He has also made numerous efforts to promote stem cell biology in Iran. In this regard, he and his team created a laboratory called “Stem Cells For All” and a mobile adventure lab using an equipped bus. These participatory learning and teaching methods are designed to empower and motivate learners and to help them acquire the skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary to create a sustainable future for stem cell research and their potential in regenerative medicine. Since 2010, he has established an “annual international school of summer” program. To increase international and country interactions, and to improve training methods in this area, invited speakers were invited from abroad.
