In 1990, she was first-team All-Pacific-10, All-Pacific Region and All-NCAA Tournament at UCLA.

Joining UCLA for her senior season, McPeak was joining one of the top programs in the nation. However, the Bruins were hungry to regain the national championship, having fallen in the semi-finals the previous two seasons. They were returning several key players, including the team’s setter. With the 1990 season UCLA won their first three matches, suffered a loss in the fourth to perennial power Nebraska, and then went on a tear. Splitting time at the setter position, McPeak had an immediate impact upon the team. By early in the year she had taken over the starting spot, beating out junior setter Jennifer Gratteau. Against Stanford she broke a UCLA record with 97 assists. Said Banachowski “We were very good last year with Jennifer, but we finally made the decision to go with Holly because she added a lot more quickness. Everybody seemed to play at a quicker pace when Holly was in there.” DeGroot witnessed this for himself during Cals two losses to the Bruins during the 1990 regular season.

McPeak was named the WPVA’s Rookie of the Year in 1991, but it was not until 1993 at the Phoenix Open that she would win her first tournament. She would win 11 tournaments that year, eight of them with Cammy Ciarelli.

McPeak chose the University of California because of its academic excellence. McPeak was the Pacific 10 Conference freshman champion in 1987. After McPeak’s first year, Marlene Piper, Cal head coach, left to coach and teach at UC Davis. Dave DeGroot was appointed his replacement. McPeak was not happy with DeGroot’s coaching changes. He found DeGroot unwilling to or unable push the team. DeGroot wasn’t happy with McPeak’s setting of the team. McPeak’s fellow Bear teammate Lisa Arce commented at the time that “Holly is certainly a competitor.” She doesn’t like to lose. She never loses, no matter what the situation is, she always wants to win. McPeak remained under DeGroot throughout her junior year and led the Golden Bears three times to the playoffs. McPeak and DeGroot’s dispute grew over time to the point where they were at an impasse. McPeak was expelled from the team by DeGroot after her junior season of 1989. McPeak could continue her education at Berkeley on a scholarship, but was not allowed to play or practice for the volleyball team.

Later, McPeak joined Sinjin Smith and Karch Kiraly. McPeak, who graduated high school in 1987 at the age 18 made her professional beach volleyball debut as a partner with Jill Horning in the WPVA “Miller Lite Open” Santa Monica. McPeak had been one year ahead of Horning at Mira Costa High. The team finished in ninth place, an achievement that the young rookies repeated later in the summer’s second professional tournament. McPeak and Horning were again paired up for two more professional beach volleyball tournaments after McPeak finished her freshman year at Cal. They both placed ninth.

The 1990 UCLA Bruins won the NCAA collegiate championship. It was the school’s fifth of seven national titles. McPeak was selected first team All-Pac-10 and first team All-Tournament. She had amassed the single season assist record of 2,192 assists, to go along with her single match assist mark of 97 assists. The team’s season record of 36 – 1 was the best mark in women’s volleyball in school history. Said coach Banachowski “We wanted McPeak out of high school because she was a tremendous athlete. I only wish I had had her for the three years instead of the one. Besides being a great athlete, she’s quick and very competitive.”
