In the 2017 general election, Lynch increased her majority to 5,376 (11.1% of those voting) over the Conservative candidate, Chris Pearson.
In the 2019 general election, Lynch was re-elected to the Halifax constituency with 21,496 votes out of 46,458 cast, and a majority of 2,569.
Lynch was only given six weeks to keep the marginal seat in Halifax for Labour. Lynch had been chosen as the party’s candidate at the end March 2015. Labour’s search to find a new candidate was triggered in February by Linda Riordan, a sitting MP who decided to retire due to health reasons. Lynch’s selection and her decision set up one the most competitive contests in Yorkshire during the election. Riordan held Halifax in 2010 for Labour by a narrow majority of 1,472 votes. The seat was a target for the Conservative Party. Lynch won the election with a majority only of 428 votes, beating the Conservative candidate.

Lynch was a member from July to Oct 2015 of the Environmental Audit Committee and was elected to the Procedure Committee in January 2016. Lynch was elected Opposition Whip to the Commons in September 2015. She was reappointed to the front bench by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn on 3 July 2017, taking on the role of Shadow Flooding & Coastal Communities Minister within the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs team.
