She has been nominated for and won awards, including the Gemini Award for 1982 for Best Theatrical Documentary for P4W: Prison for Women.
This film inspired Dale and Cole to create their first feature documentary, P4W – Prison for Women (1981). After four years of negotiating with officials, Dale & Cole were allowed to film in an all-women prison outside Kingston, Ontario, Canada. The documentary P4W: Prison for Women (1981) was born. Dale and Cole were co-directors and coproducers and focused on inmates’ relationships and willingness to live with ongoing challenges. The film received positive reviews from critics and the general public. It won several awards at film festivals as well as a Genie Award in 1982.
The Thin Line (1977), their next short, documented the daily lives of criminally insane people being held in maximum security prisons. Dale and Cole admitted that they wanted to highlight the humanity of the prisoners to create a feeling of shared humanity with the audience.

Dale was born in Toronto, Ontario to a poor family. Due to family conflict, Dale decided to leave her home when she was a teenager. She worked as a non- therapeutic masseuse in Toronto during this time. Dale was admitted to the film studies program at Sheridan College Oakville, Ontario in the middle of the 1970s. Janis Cole was her first love and she would work together for the next twenty years.
In 1976, Dale and Cole made their first short film Cream Soda as students. This documentary exposed the demands of women working in Toronto-based body- rub salons. Their next film, Minimum Charge No Cover (1976), examined the lives of gays, drag queens and other substance users.
