Hitomi Shimatani Biography

Hitomi Shimatani is one of the most popular and richest Singer who was born on September 4, 1980 in Kure, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. Hitomi Shimatani (Dao Gui hitomi / Shimatani Hitomi) is a Japanese pop artist signed to Avex Trax.

She made her debut in 2003 as an actress on the Fuji TV drama Boku dake no Madonna. She was also given one of the major roles. In 2003, she also appeared as a voice actress in the animated movie Doraemon Nobita in Wan-Nyan Spacetime Odyssey. She also took part in A Star is Born 2004, her first musical with Yukie Nakama, Eriko Imai, and others.

In 2006, Shimatani released three singles. The first one was the double A-side single “Haru Machibito/Camellia”, released on March 15. Another double A-side single, entitled “Destiny: Taiyō no Hana/Koimizu: Tears of Love” was released on June 21. “Destiny: Taiyō no Hana” was used as opening theme for Black Jack

On March 7, 2007, Shimatani released her 6th studio album, Prima Rosa, which peaked at number 16 on the Oricon charts. She also recorded a cover of High School Musical’s “When There Was Me And You” (in Japanese entitled “Anata to Ita Toki”), which was included as part of the Disney film’s Japanese soundtrack. On December 5, Shimatani released her first cover album, Otoko Uta: Cover Song Collection, on which she only recorded covers originally sung by male artists, such as Anzen Chitai, Begin and Masayoshi Yamazaki. For the album she also made a new crossover version of “Amairo no Kami no Otome”, which she performed live at that year’s Kōhaku.

Shimatani’s third single “Papillon”, a Japanese translation of Janet Jackson’s “Doesn’t Really Matter”, was her breakthrough. This was in 2001. This single was her first Top 15 single on the Oricon charts. It also remained in the Top 50 for twenty-four weeks and sold more than 200,000 copies. The sixth single, “Shanty”, was her first Top 10 Japanese single, peaking at number 7. She released another cover in May 2002, this time “Amairo no Kami no Otome”, by the 60’s group sound band Village Singers. It was a huge success and reached number 4. This led to a boom in covers in Japan. It was also a popular song to sing in karaoke by Japanese people. For 18 weeks it remained at the top of the Oricon Karaoke charts and took the first place on its annual charts. After a successful year, Shimatani was invited to the Kohaku Uta Gassen, Japan’s most important TV show on New Year’s Eve. She would then be invited to return for 3 more years.

Shimatani, then seventeen years old, attended “The Japan Audition 1997”, a competition where she was selected as the winner from around 200,000 applicants and received a recording contract with Avex. She continued her high school studies in Hiroshima. However, she began taking vocal lessons in Tokyo on weekends. She graduated from Shimizugaoka Secondary School.

The first album released under this new style was Heart & Symphony, which featured four singles including “Garnet Moon” (theme song of PlayStation 2’s Another Century’s Episode) and “Falco” (theme song of The Law of Ueki). The album peaked at number 7 on the Oricon charts.
