Yoko Ogawa, a member of the selection committee, praised the book’s ability to expand the horizons of literature. Kawakami’s book Okinatori ni Sarawarenai Yo (Da KinaNiao Nisarawarenaiyou) won the 44th Izumi Kyoka Literature Prize. It is a collection 14 stories that was published by Kodansha.

Kawakami, 36 years old, made his debut as a writer and editor of literary fiction in 1994 with a collection called Kamisama (God) which contained short stories. Hebi wo fumi, which means “Tread on a Snake”) won the Akutagawa prize in 1996. This is one of Japan’s most prestigious literary prizes. Later, it was translated into English as Record of a Night Too Short. In 2001, she was awarded the Tanizaki Prize for her novel Sensei no kaban (The Briefcase/Stranger Weather in Tokyo). It is a love story about a friendship between a woman in her thirties with her ex-teacher, a man in her seventies. Kawakami, who had written her first short story, “Kamisama”, (“God”) after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Disaster, rewrote the story, keeping the original plot, but adding the Fukushima events to the story.
