Herizo Razafimahaleo Biography

Herizo Razafimahaleo is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on February 21, 1955 in Ihosy, Madagascar. Herizo Jossicher Rahafimahaleo, February 21, 1955 – July 25, 2008. was a political figure in Madagascar. He was a three-time candidate for the presidency. From 1997 to 1998, he was Deputy Prime Minister as well as Foreign Minister.

Razafimahaleo ran again in the December 2001 presidential elections, winning around 4% and finishing fourth. In the midst of the crisis that followed the election, Ratsiraka’s main challenger Marc Ravalomanana contesting the results, Razafimahaleo quit as National President for LEADER-Fanilo. He resigned on May 18, 2002.

Razafimahaleo opposed the constitutional changes proposed in the 2007 constitutional referendum and participated in a national committee that campaigned for a “no” vote as a coordinator of action.

Razafimahaleo died on 25 July 2008 in Antananarivo after being hospitalized due to renal failure that led to dehydration. He suffered four heart attacks and died in the hospital. His family declined any posthumous honors for Razafimahaleo from the government. His body was taken from Antananarivo to Ambositra on July 29 for his funeral there on July 30.

Ratsiraka was elected president on February 9, 1997. He was also a member of the new government headed by Pascal Rakotomavo. On February 27, Razafimahaleo was named as the Deputy Prime Minister responsible for Foreign Affairs. He was one of three deputy prime minsters. He was not included the July 1998 government of Prime Minister Tantely andrianarivo.

Razafimahaleo served as President Didier Ratsiraka’s economic advisor from 1989 to 1991. In 1992, he founded the LEADER Fanilo Party and was elected in June 1993 from Ambositra to the National Assembly. Razafimahaleo, who was appointed Minister of Industrial Promotion and Tourism by Prime Minister Francisque Ravony’s government in August 1993, resigned in July 1994. In 1995, he founded the newspaper L’Express de Madagascar.

Razafimahaleo, the LEADER–Fanilo presidential candidate in November 1996’s election, won 15.13% and took third place. He announced his support of Ratsiraka on December 28th. The second round was held the following day. Razafimahaleo’s support was crucial to Ratsiraka’s narrow victory over Albert Zafy.

He began a return to active politics with a press conference on January 24, 2006, in which he was sharply critical of Ravalomanana. He officially announced on September 1, 2006, that he would run for president again in the December 2006 election. In the days prior to the election some observers considered him the main challenger to Ravalomanana, the incumbent president. Razafimahaleo took 9.03% of the vote and came in fourth place according to official results. His best result was in Antsiranana Province, where he won 22.44% of the vote, followed by Fianarantsoa Province, where he won 16.37%.
