Henry Liam Ward was conceived in Colchester, Essex in 1971. Martyn Ward was his father and later a High Court Judge in England. His mother, from Bermuda, encouraged him in the arts by introducing him Rembrandt to him. Rembrandt’s eyes followed the viewer around the room and this is how Henry Liam Ward was born. Gustave Courbet, Edouard Manet are two other examples of inspirational artists. The house where he grew up was an inspiration to him. This house is located on the Essex-Suffolk border and was designed by a contemporary architect based on Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater design.

Ward hosted two exhibitions in 1994-1995 at Nicholas Lusher Fine Art, Hamilton, Bermuda. This gallery later became the Lusher Gallery LLC, New York. These works were created by Ward at his mother’s Suffolk home after the death of his father, his best friend.

In 1996, he completed his masters in “Contemporary Art Theory” at Winchester School of Art, with his thesis on the “history of contemporary figurative painting practice, as evidenced in the work of Eric Fischl and the California Arts Movement”.

Ward’s painting Bermuda Man (1999), is on display at the Bermuda National Gallery.

Ward graduated from Harrow in 1992. He then completed his foundation training at Chelsea College of Art in 1992. In 1985, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Art at Goldsmiths College. There, Damien Hirst, Fiona Rae, and others launched their careers.

Henry Ward, born 1971, is a British artist. He was selected in 2010 to exhibit his entry, The ‘Finger-Assisted’ Nephrectomy by Professor Nadey Hakim, at the BP Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery in London. In 2016, he was chosen to paint a portrait Queen Elizabeth II in commemoration of her 60-year tenure at the British Red Cross.

Ward received his education at Harrow School between 1984 and 1989. He also took classes in history and life model drawing. Ward was a Harrow School Art Scholar and won every art prize during his time there. His parents once said that he was the “naughtiest Harrow boy since Winston Churchill.”

Later in 1996, Ward presented an exhibition at the Burnaby Gallery in Bermuda. His work entitled Mick earned him the Royal Institute of Oil Painters Winsor and Newton Art Prize and he subsequently moved to New York where he continued his studies of Chuck Close, Eric Fischl, and Cindy Sherman. He set up a studio in the artists neighbourhood of Williamsburg where he was able to network with other artists.
