He is the only Kenyan to have ventured so far and achieved so much success. His 2005 time of 2:31.31 at the Hamburg Marathon is still the world record for blind runners.

After suffering a stroke May 1, 1995, Wanyoike almost lost his sight. “I went to sleep as a normal person. The next day, I was blind.” He lost 95% of his sight that night, and gradually lost the rest over the following years. He was devastated. “I believed my life was over.”
Grace, Grace’s mother, took him to the Kikuyu Eye Clinic. This is a nearby hospital that is supported by Christian Blind Mission International (CBMI). It has been recognized as one of the top centers for visually impaired people in East Africa. Petra Verweyen was the chief of the Low Vision Project at the clinic and helped him find his way back to life. She also arranged for him learning to knit pullovers. He expressed his gratitude for the assistance he received at the clinic and promised that he would help others blind people to be self-sufficient. He won his first Paralympic gold medal in Sydney in 2000. He has since purchased knitting machines with prize money and donations from charitable organizations such as Arnold Schwarzenegger. He now works with blind Kenyans to teach them how to knit pullovers.
Wanyoike is one of the world’s fastest runners. While still a child he was already being groomed to join an elite corps of athletes in a country that is known for producing more world-class middle-distance runners over the last twenty years than any other country on earth. He excelled at the 5,000 and 10,000-meter distances.
