He is also a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served two years in Brazil as a missionary. The Sacramento Bee reported that Marsh was a significant financial supporter of Proposition 8 (two donations totalling $90,000.)
Marsh was ranked #2 in the world during the 1984 Olympic Games. Marsh was fourth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase finals. He lost the bronze medal to Brian Diemer by 0.19 seconds. Marsh then collapsed on the track and was taken to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum with a gurney. Marsh was a member of the sub-4-minute group of milers in 1985 with a time of 3:59.31 at Bern, Switzerland on August 16.
