The 2004-05 Eagles had a 16-12 overall record in his first season at NCCU and advanced to the quarterfinals for the CIAA Tournament. His team won three games against teams participating in the NCAA tournament. They beat Bowie State and Catawba, as well as Virginia Union, who were eventual NCAA Division II champions.

In 2006-07, the Eagles finished their final season in the NCAA Division II ranks with a record of 13-15. NCCU defeated four ranked opponents, including the eventual NCAA Division II national champions, Barton College (Nov. 18, 2006). That victory marked the second time in the previous three seasons that the Eagles beat the eventual national title winner.

In 2011, Dickerson became the head coach at Johnston Community College.

From 1997 to 2002, Dickerson was the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s head coach. From 1989-1997, Dickerson was the UTC associate head coach. He led those teams to six Southern Conference regular-season titles, four conference tournament champions, and four NCAA tournament appearances. Dickerson also visited the Sweet 16 in 1997 as a #1 seed.

Dickerson, a 6’4″ (1.93m) and 190 lb (86kg) guard, played at the University of Charleston in West Virginia between 1969 and 1973. Dickerson, an NAIA All- American who averaged 16 points and 12 rebound during his four-year college career (1969-73), is still the only individual in conference history to have been named First Team All-Conference or Conference All-Tournament four times consecutively.
