Bolton was born in Nairobi (British Kenya) on March 2, 1963. From 1979 to 1990, he served as a lance-corporal in the Royal Hussars. After leaving the regular army, he became a police constable with the Thames Valley Police for eight years. During this time, he was awarded an award for exceptional bravery.

Bolton was the Liberal Democrat candidate for the seat of Runnymede in Surrey in 2005. However, he defected to UKIP and stated that he felt more at home in a party that believed what it said. He was a UKIP candidate in Shepway District Council in 2015.

Bolton began a relationship with Jo Marney after meeting her shortly before Christmas 2017, and spent Christmas with her after leaving his wife. He claimed to have ended the relationship with Marney after details of her SMS message comments, in which she made overtly racist comments against Meghan Markle, the fiancée of Prince Harry, came to light, though the two continued to see each other. Bolton said he had been unaware of Marney’s comments. However, during their This Morning appearance following his resignation, Bolton and Marney confirmed their relationship had ended while he sought to keep his office, but that it had since been rekindled. Later, he admitted that the relationship had never actually ended.

During the campaign Bolton challenged the decision to allow Anne Marie Waters to stand. He said that her candidacy was in violation of the party’s rules of procedure as she was not considered to be ‘in good standing’ due to previous exclusions for elections. He withdrew the challenge when faced with the possibility that it could lead to counter-suits against the party. Subsequently, he was quoted by the press as saying that UKIP was in danger of becoming the “UK Nazi party” if the wrong candidate were elected as leader. Following his victory he stated that “Brexit is our core task” while separately declaring Islam a “concern”, though he believed that an anti-Islam agenda would offer UKIP little gain. In recognition of his new role, in October 2017 he was placed at Number 86 in ‘The Top 100 Most Influential People on the Right’ by commentator Iain Dale.

In 1998, he left the Thames Valley Police to assume overseas security and police roles. He also worked for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in hostile environment, including Afghanistan.

Henry David Bolton OBE, born 2 March 1963, is a British politician and leader of the UK Independence Party. He served as UKIP’s leader from 29 September 2017 through 17 February 2018. He is a former British Army lance corporal and Territorial Army officer, as well as a police officer. His experience includes a variety of roles in border management strategies.

Bolton was a police officer and enlisted in the Territorial Army as a part- time soldier. He was awarded a commission with the Wessex Regiment in 1992. He was promoted to captain two years later. After the dissolution of the Wessex Regiment, Bolton was part-time with the Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment and Royal Rifle Volunteers, until he left the Territorial Army, in 2000.

Bolton was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 2013 New Year Honours “for services to international security and stabilisation” following his role as a Stabilisation Team Leader for the Provincial Reconstruction Team in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.
