Henriette Valium Biography

Henriette Valium is one of the most popular and richest Comics Artist who was born on May 4, 1959 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Patrick Henley, born May 4, 1959, is a Montreal-based comic book artist and painter. Although Valium gained significant recognition in North America and Europe from his early 1980s start, his provocative and hallucinogenic style kept him away from the mainstream comics industry.

Coeur de Maman (“Mother’s Heart”) was published in 2000. It is a self- published, 11.5″ x 17.5″ silkscreened comic book. Coeur de Maman is a strange story about a monstrous, over-sized mother’s heart. The pages are so illustrated they almost become unreadable. The Survivor was also completed by Valium in the same year. It is a massive painting centered around a Joseph Goebbels picture. In the spring 2000, he participated in an exhibit of his work at Los Angeles’ La Luz de Jesus gallery.

In spring 2007, L’Association from France plan to publish a complete anthology of his comics. Another French collective, Le Dernier Cri, are working on a box set that will include the book from L’Association, an audio cd, and an anthology of all his drawings and paintings. Valium’s web site was finalized in February 2007.

In March 2013, some of Valium’s art pieces were exposed at Espace Robert Poulin in Montreal.

He also collaborated with many independent zines in Europe and North America. These included Zero Zero, which led to the reprinting of Primitive Cristin by the US. In 1996, Valium began to experiment with collage more formally in the middle of the 1990s. This led to his art becoming more abstract and more horrific. We can find La Prison Anale des Freres Rouges (1996) and the Cures Malades (“sick Priests”) series among the many collages from that time. Through the use of machine parts and pornography over portraits of priests in the latter, the collage is a stark and graphic critique of the Catholic Church’s historical influence on Quebec. His collage work with explicit sexual imagery (often as far as bestiality), and horrifying press photos has kept him from any public recognition or government subsidies. Valium’s main source of income since the 1980s has been printing posters for Montreal bars and rock bands, including Le Cafe Campus and Les Foufounes Electriques.

Vagorbine 14 (1981), Valium’s first self-published title is the only exception. Valium’s early forays into comic book publishing can be found in various Quebec compilations as well as fanzines such Tchiize, Rectangle, and Motel. Iceberg (1984), where he introduced himself to the world under the pseudonym of “Henriette Vaium”, was a notable contribution. Many stories from the 1980s were collected into 1000 Rectums It’s an Album (1987), an anthology self-published by the author. Many themes and characters are introduced in the book that would become his trademarks over time. Valium features some of his most well-known protagonists, including his alter-ego Pattou and Mister Iceberg. Doc Lekron is the evil scientist. These stories are often only one page long and focus on Valium’s usual themes of sickness, addictions, abnormal homosexuality, and social decay. Although the drawings are heavily influenced by punk aesthetics 1000 Rectums doesn’t yet display the same complex and violent graphic excesses that will be found in later publications like Primitive Cretin.

The early 1990s saw a brief experiment in punk rock as a singer for Valium et les Depressifs, and then the release of C’est un monstre (1992). Primitive Cretin was born during this prolific time. (1993), a self-published 11.5″ x 17.5″ anthology. The book is Valium’s most well-known work. It contains a series of absurd and demented stories, many of which are based on the 1000 Rectums themes. There are also short-lived characters such as Tiplouplou and The Boxing-Glove Familie. Surreal illustrations are the real highlight of this book. Every page of Primitive Cretin is a masterpiece! Each page of Primitive Cretin is a separate world. Images of bizarre organisms, distorted everyday objects and extreme urban density create an impression of disorder. It is nearly impossible to understand the complex drawings and their immense scale. Primitive Cretin was able to achieve this effect! Valium must spend several months working on each page in order to achieve this effect in Primitive Cretin! The creation of a comic book is a lengthy and difficult process that can take as long as 6 years.

More recently, Valium has kept experimenting with collage, integrating Photoshop into his creations, which led among other things to a series of serigraphs titled Les Héritiers du Rêve (2002), and the small books Mutants I (2002) and Mutants II (2003). His latest comic book, Princesse Brune (“Brown Princess”), was completed in 2006. His most recent collage, Djoker, was shown at the Voltigeur gallery in Toulouse in the summer of the same year. Valium is currently working on Mutants III, a tribute to Hans Bellmer, which will mainly consist of pornographic computer collages.
