Reker’s aide, along with three others who tried to subdue the attacker, was also injured in the attack. After the attack, Reker’s main opponent in the mayoral election was Social Democrat Jochen Ott. He suspended his campaign. Reker won while still being in an intensive care unit at a local hospital.
