Top Facts about Henri Becquerel
- Discovered radioactivity in 1896.
- Awarded Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903.
- Coined the term “radioactivity”.
- Studied phosphorescence and luminescence.
- Conducted experiments with uranium salts.
- Developed photographic plates to detect radiation.
- Died from complications of radiation exposure.
- Descendant of a prominent family of scientists and scholars.

What did Henri Becquerel discover?
By accident, he discovered that uranium salts spontaneously emit a penetrating radiation that can be registered on a photographic plate. Further studies made it clear that this radiation was something new and not X-ray radiation: he had discovered a new phenomenon, radioactivity.

Who first discovered radiation?
Although it was Henri Becquerel that discovered the phenomenon, it was his doctoral student, Marie Curie, who named it: radioactivity. She would go on to do much more pioneering work with radioactive materials, including the discovery of additional radioactive elements: thorium, polonium, and radium.
Who was Henri Becquerel and why was his key so important?
For his discovery of radioactivity, Becquerel shared the 1903 Nobel Prize for Physics with the Curies; he was also honoured with other medals and memberships in foreign societies. His own Academy of Sciences elected him its president and one of its permanent secretaries.
Who discovered beta particles?
In 1899 Ernest Rutherford demonstrated that there were at least two distinct types of radiation: alpha radiation and beta radiation. He discovered that radioactive preparations gave rise to the formation of gases.
