Timmer, who was almost 38 when he retired, had helped Feyenoord to seventh place in the 2008-09 campaign. He had played in 513 matches as an amateur – the only league. Timmer signed a contract with SC Heerenveen in March 2010 after he was injured. He went on trial and played nine games, finishing in 11th place.
In June 2012, Timmer was appointed as technical/commercial manager of second level club AGOVV Apeldoorn.
Timmer was born in Hierden, Harderwijk, Gelderland. He spent his first 11 senior seasons in the second division, with FC Zwolle – named PEC in his first year. In 2000, he moved to AZ Alkmaar, making his Eredivisie debut at almost 29 and also serving unassuming loans at Feyenoord and AFC Ajax. He was part of the Feyenoord squad that won the 2001–02 UEFA Cup, and was an unused substitute in the final.
Timmer won seven caps for his nation, but never in official matches. He represented the country at the 2006 FIFA World Cup as well as the UEFA Euro 2008.

Timmer returned to AZ in 2003 for three more solid years. He was crucial as the club came second in the domestic cup and the league. After an altercation with Louis van Gaal, Timmer made a second return to AZ in 2006, this time to Feyenoord.
