Helen Louise Maroulis (born September 19, 1991) is an American freestyle wrestler who competes in the women’s 55-kg and 53-kg categories. She was a gold medalist at the 2015 World Wrestling Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada and a gold medalist at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil she became the first-ever American to win a gold medal in women’s freestyle wrestling at the Olympic Games.

Maroulis beat Saori Yoshida 4-1 to win a gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics. This was the first Olympic gold medal for the United States in a women’s wrestling event. Maroulis attributes a large portion of her success to the coaching of Valentin Kalika.

She is the daughter and son of Yiannis and Paula Maroulis. Her grandparents immigrated from Kalamos, Greece in the 1960s to the United States. She was raised in Rockville Maryland.

After gaining experience in wrestling in high school, she attended Missouri Baptist University, where she was a member of the women’s team in Saint Louis, Missouri. She then transferred to Simon Fraser University in Burnaby (British Columbia), Canada. Later, she dedicated her time to training at U.S. Olympic Education Center (Northern Michigan University).

At the 2015 World Wrestling Championships, she won a gold medal in Las Vegas, Nevada. She became the first American woman to win a medal in freestyle women’s wrestling at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, 2016 during the Summer Olympics.
