Yungst was the daughter of Eva Faiman and Henry, both survivors of The Holocaust. She was born in Tel Aviv. In 1956, the family moved to Newark, New Jersey. She was born in Hillside, New Jersey, and graduated from Hillside High School, where she was also a member the National Honor Society. With a B.A., she graduated from Newark State College (now Kean University). She is a teacher of music and theatre.
Yungst represented New Jersey in Miss America 1971 in Atlantic City. At the event, the Women’s Liberation Front was visible. Yungst did not make it to the finals, but she lost to Miss Texas 1970, Phyllis George. Yungst, Vicky Jo Todd and Cheryl Browne traveled to Vietnam in August 1971 with George, Miss Nevada
