In the 2012 Tour of California, Haussler was denied victory on the four first stages of the race by Peter Sagan of the Liquigas–Cannondale squad, who beat him to the line each time. He would have to settle for second on every one of those stages.

Haussler left Garmin–Sharp at the end of the 2012 season, and joined the new IAM Cycling team for the 2013 season. In 2015 he won the Australian National Road Race Championships for the first time in his career.

Haussler is a dual Australian-German national. He originally raced under a German licence. In a 2008 interview with CyclingNews.com, Haussler stated that he would not race for Germany anymore as he wanted to compete for Australia at the 2010 UCI Road World Championships. He said, “I wouldn’t take it” when asked what he would do to race for Germany at the 2008 UCI Road World Championships. There is a three-year ban on starting for one country at the worlds before you can start for another. However, the UCI insisted that Haussler would need to give up his German citizenship if he wanted to ride for Australia. This was stated by the cyclist in November 2009.

Haussler was the son of a German father, and an Australian mother. He was raised in Inverell, New South Wales. In 1998, Haussler moved to Germany to fulfill his dream of becoming a professional cyclist.

Haussler became a professional in 2005. He rose to fame with a stage victory in the 2005 Vuelta a Espana. Haussler won five races in 2006, and has continued to be a strong classics campaigner. In 2009, Haussler finished second in the Tour of Flanders as well as Milan-San Remo. In July 2010, the Cervélo Test Team announced that Haussler would indeed give up his German citizenship and will ride for Australia in the future. However, a nagging knee injury forced Haussler out of what would have been his international cycling debut for his birth country at the 2010 World Championships.
