Wilmer was raised on a farm near Emsland. He graduated from the Leoninum in 1980, a high school run by the Dehonians of Handrup near his hometown. He also entered the novitiate in Freiburg that year. He studied romance philology (romance language) in Paris and theology in Freiburg from 1981 to 1986. He was then ordained a priest by Archbishop Oskar Sier, the archbishop from Freiburg. After that, he went to Rome to continue his studies at the Gregorian Pontifical University. His focus was French philosophy. Wilmer received a Doctor of Theology degree in Freiburg in 1991. He was primarily interested in the concept of mysticism within the philosophy of Maurice Blondel. His work was awarded the Bernhard Welte prize.
He completed his Master of Arts in History shortly after. Henri Nouwen, a Dutch priest, met Wilmer shortly before he completed his first master’s. Wilmer was asked to represent Nouwen for four months at L’Arche Daybreak, Toronto, which is a facility for persons with disabilities. He then worked as a school counselor for two years and taught religion, politics, and history at the Liebfrauenschule Vechta, a German high school in Niedersachsen. He went to the United States in 1997 to teach history and German at Fordham Preparatory School in the Bronx (New York). After his return, he was appointed headmaster at the SCJ highschool Leoninum in Handrup.
On 25 May 2015 Wilmer was elected by the Dehonians as its superior general.
