Hector Calma is one of the most popular and richest Basketball Player who was born on March 2, 1960 in Santa Ana, California, United States. Hector Calma, a former professional Filipino basketball player, was born March 2, 1960. He was 5′ 8″ tall and played point guard. He is most well-known for his association with the San Miguel Beer team, the Philippine Basketball Association.
San Miguel won 6 of 7 PBA conference titles, including the coveted Grand Slam, between 1987 and 1989. Calma wasn’t known for his scoring but his skill as a playmaker was what sparked the SMB offense in those legendary years. Calma’s ability to playmaker was highly valued by a team with explosive scorers like Ramon Fernandez and Ricardo Brown. Calma was selected to the PBA Mythical Team in 1987, 1988 and 1989. Calma averaged 10.6 points on 50.3% shooting and 5.3 assists per match over those three years. However, the 1990 PBA Annual stated that “Numbers can’t fully determine this little guy’s worth” – Calma creates so many offensive situations that most often blur the lines between victory and defeat.
Calma’s career faded in the 1990s with the emergence of younger point guards such as Ronnie Magsanoc and Johnny Abarrientos. Adding to this were the injuries he sustained both from his collegiate and professional years. Alongside teammate Ramon Fernandez, he decided to leave basketball as both players announced their retirement before the start of the 1995 season of the PBA. After his retirement, Calma became involved in the front office of the Coca-Cola Tigers and the San Miguel Beermen. He served as the team manager of the Beermen until the end of 2013.
In 2000, Calma was named to the PBA’s 25th Anniversary All-Time Team. He was joined in that honor by two of his teammates from the SMB Grand Slam team, Ramon Fernandez and Samboy Lim
Calma began his professional basketball career at 26 years old in 1986’s PBA Open Conference. He, along with several national teammates, was absorbed by San Miguel Beer, which re-joined the PBA as Magnolia Cheese. Calma was the point guard for San Miguel Beer’s first PBA Championship. This was coached by Norman Black.
