Hector Hugo Balderas Jr., an American lawyer and former prosecutor, has been the Attorney General for New Mexico since 2015. Balderas, at 33 years old, became the youngest Hispanic elected official in New Mexico when he won the race for New Mexico State Auditors. Balderas was previously a New Mexico State Representative from 2004 to 2006. Balderas is also the elected treasurer of National Association of Latino Elected Officials.
Balderas ran for the US Senate seat held in 2012 by Jeff Bingaman, a retiring Democrat. Martin Heinrich won the Democratic primary.
Balderas was elected as the Attorney General in 2015.
Steve Terrell at the Santa Fe New Mexican wrote on May 16, 2015 that Balderas, who won his attorney-general race, was the only Hispanic on the statewide Democratic ticket in 2014. He was the top vote-getter of all statewide candidates that year, pulling 1,565 more votes than Governor Susana Martinez.
He was elected by the Democratic Party of New Mexico as Jeff Armijo’s replacement on the ballot for State Audior. With a shorter campaign period, he won the election with almost 55% of the vote. He was reelected in 2010, and received the second-highest number votes among all New Mexico Democratic statewide candidates.
