Bob Wheeler, Wheeler’s husband was a Conservative councillor and was elected leader of South Derbyshire District Council after his wife retired to become an MP. In January 2018, he resigned as the Leader of the Council. He died in late 2018.
In the House of Commons she sat on the Standards and Privileges Committee, the European Scrutiny Committee and the Communities and Local Government Committee. She was also a member of the Public Bill Committee for the Defence Reform Act 2014.
In August 2016, following the 2016 Rio Olympics, the European Union social media account shared a modified medals table showing its combined member states in first place. Wheeler tweeted in response that the British Empire had won the 2016 Rio Olympics along with a map of former imperial territories. Her comments were attacked by critics as being “deeply offensive to so many people and their ancestors” and “insensitive and ignorant”, but she rejected calls to apologise, instead arguing that her comments were “tongue-in-cheek”.
Wheeler was unsuccessful as her party’s candidate in Coventry South at the 2005 and 2001 general elections. Before being elected to the South Derbyshire electorate, Wheeler was an A-List member of the Conservative Party. She won the seat with a majority (7,128 votes) from Labour at the 2010 general elections. There was also a 9.8% swing towards the Conservatives. She was elected as a Member to Parliament and stepped down as the Conservative council group leader. In 2015 and 2017, she was reelected, the former defying polling which suggested that her seat might be at risk due to the Conservative Government’s refusal to award a major contract for Bombardier, a local train manufacturer.

Heather Kay Wheeler, born 14 May 1959, is a British Conservative Party politician. She was elected as the Member of Parliament for South Derbyshire at the 2010 general elections. The seat had been held by the Labour Party for 13 years. From January 2018 to July 2019, she was the Parliamentary Under- Secretary of state at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. From January 2018 to July 2019, she was the Parliamentary Undersecretary of State for Asia and the Pacific under the Johnson administration. She resigned on 13 February 2020 because of family commitments.
Wheeler was first elected to South Derbyshire District Council 1995 in the safe Conservative seat Repton. She rose to the top of the Conservative group of the council and was elected Leader of the Council from 2007-2010. Re- elected to the Repton Ward Councillor seat, she was defeated by Harriet in
- Harriet’s daughter ran unsuccessfully for the Swadlincote Conservative candidate in 2011. Bob, her husband, defended his Linton ward and remained Leader of council.
Wheeler was one of 79 Conservative MPs who supported a 2011 rebel motion calling for a referendum on the European Union. She also joined a 2013 rebel amendment expressing regret at not including the referendum in the government’s plans. She subsequently backed the government’s plans to hold a referendum in 2017 and opposed a proposal to hold it in 2014. Wheeler backed Leave in the referendum.
