Hembree was a Spartanburg native who played high school football and baseball at Broome High School. He was Broome’s standout quarterback and pitcher, but he did not pitch in his senior season due to a knee injury he sustained playing football. Hembree, instead, was a designated hitter in his senior season. He had a.320 average.
Hembree was initially a student at the University of South Carolina. He only made one pitch in his freshman season of 2008. Hembree then transferred to Spartanburg Methodist College. This junior college is part of National Junior College Athletic Association. He was a sophomore transfer and went 7-0 with a 1.22 earned runs average (ERA). Hembree was awarded a scholarship to College of Charleston, a NCAA Division I school. He transferred there and spent his final season of college ball. Hembree also studied physical education.
Hembree began the 2011 season pitching for the Class A-Advanced San Jose Giants, and was promoted to the Double-A Richmond Flying Squirrels in late June. He went a combined 1–1 with a 1.86 ERA over 54 relief appearances, with 78 strikeouts and 38 saves in 53 ⁄3 innings.
