French police are currently looking for Hayat Boumeddiene, born 26 June 1988, as a suspect accomplice to her common law husband Amedy Coulibaly. He was the main suspect in the Montrouge shooting in which Clarissa Jean-Philippe, a municipal police officer, was shot and killed. He was also the hostage-taker in the Porte de Vincennes Siege in which he killed four hostages before being killed by police.

According to Spanish authorities Coulibaly drove Boumeddiene to Madrid, Spain on 31/12/2014 and stayed there until 2/1/15. Turkish authorities claim that Boumeddiene flew from Madrid, Spain to Istanbul, Turkey on January 2, 2015. She was with Mahdi Sabri Belhoucine, 23, a French citizen of North African descent. Their brother Mohammed was convicted in France of terrorist charges in 2010. They were both sentenced to a year in Villepinte prison. Both had return tickets dating back to 9 January, which they never used. Turkey’s intelligence agency, the National Intelligence Organisation, (MIT), placed her under surveillance. They followed her movements for two days, listened to her phone conversations and tracked her cell phone until she left Turkey. According to Mevlut Cavusoglu, Turkish Foreign Affairs Minister, they stayed in Istanbul in adjacent rooms at a hotel. According to Turkish officials, she and Mahdi SABRI Belhoucine traveled from Istanbul to Sanliurfa, a southeastern Turkish town near the Syrian border. Boumeddiene called France multiple times during their stay.

In February 2015, French authorities were investigating whether a woman in a video released 3 February by French-speaking ISIS fighters might be Boumeddiene. The video, titled Blow Up France 2, shows a woman standing next to the ISIS speaker, wearing camouflage clothing and holding a weapon. The Islamic State’s magazine Dabiq praised her in a long interview, and Hasna Aitboulahcen who was killed in the later Paris attacks was a fan of hers and lauded her on Facebook.

According to Coulibaly’s attorney, she was the more radical of the two. She is currently being sought by French police as a suspected accomplice of Coulibaly, alleged to have helped him commit his attacks. She arrived in Turkey five days before the attacks, was described by newspapers as “France’s most wanted woman”, and was last tracked on 10 January 2015 to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant-controlled border town of Tell Abyad in Syria. Hasna Ait Boulahcen who was killed in the later Paris attacks was a fan of hers and lauded her on Facebook.

Boumeddiene is believed then to have crossed the Syria-Turkey border and entered Syria with Sabri on January 8, the same day Coulibaly killed a policewoman using her car as a weapon. Cavusoglu stated that telephone recordings helped him understand the situation. On 10 January, she called from Tell Abyad, a Levant-controlled Syrian town, Islamic State of Iraq, to which Cavusoglu replied: “We understand this thanks to telephone recordings.” According to the New York Times, she is reported to have fled to Syria, possibly to join the Islamic State to which Mr. Coulibaly has pledged allegiance.
