Harvey Kubernik was born Los Angeles. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from San Diego State University. Special Major Degree: Health, Sociology, Literature In 1972, he began his career as a music journalist. Later, he recalled how he was able to establish himself professionally by attending a Los Angeles press conference before George Harrison’s 1974 North American tour. Kubernik, a junior contributor to Los Angeles Free Press, presented a report from the press conference to Ray Coleman, Melody Maker editor, in London. This led to a front page story and weekly assignments to the British magazine, from 1975 to 1980.

MCA Records also employed him as an A&R director and, starting in 1979, as a record production manager. He played percussion from 1981 to 1982 on Runaways recordings for Kim Fowley. He also assisted Phil Spector in the production of Leonard Cohen, Paley Brothers and Ramones albums. Kubernik produced over 50 albums of poetry, spoken word and music.

In 2009, Kubernik’s book Canyon of Dreams was published by Sterling and Barnes & Noble. It details the Laurel Canyon music community of Los Angeles and incorporates the photography of Henry Diltz. Other books by Kubernik include A Perfect Haze: The Illustrated History of the Monterey International Pop Festival, It Was 50 Years Ago Today: The Beatles Invade America and Hollywood, and Turn Up the Radio! Rock, Pop, and Roll in Los Angeles 1956–1972. His 2017 book 1967: A Complete Rock Music History of the Summer of Love documents the Summer of Love.
