He is an American retired professional basketball player, a businessman, and a former high school teammate to NBA star Michael Jordan.

Smith played on several professional basketball teams, including the Hemel & Watford Royals in the Premier English Basketball League (1985–86), the TuS Bramsche of the German Basketball League (1986–87), the Westchester Golden Apples in the United States Basketball League (summer 1986), AST Tarrare of France (1987–88) and the Kumagai Gumi Brruins of Japan Basketball League (1988–90). He was a leader in many cases, including rebounding, scoring and blocking shots.

Smith studied Psychology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte between 1981 and 1985. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree. Smith was a four-year basketball scholar, and played small forward and power forward for the Charlotte 49ers. He captained the team in his senior year and was the Sun Belt Conference’s leader in rebounding.

Smith and Michael Jordan were childhood best friends. They played together in their ninth-grade basketball team. Both were able to apply for the one varsity basketball team sophomore spot in 1978, their second year at Emsley A. Laney High School. Smith (6’7″) (2.01m) was chosen because of his height. Jordan (5’11”) (1.80m) was sent to the JV team by Clifton “Pop” Herring. Jordan grew four inches over the following year and was then selected for the varsity basketball team as a junior who displayed extraordinary competitive passion.

In 1991, Jordan acknowledged the impact of the event, “It all started when Coach Herring cut me. What it did was instill some values in me. It was a lesson to me to dig within myself.” Jordan would check into hotels under the alias “Leroy Smith” throughout his professional basketball career.
