Facts & Trivia
Helen Ranked on the list of most popular Researcher. Also ranked in the elit list of famous people born in Japan. Haruko Obokata celebrates birthday on September 25 of every year.
In manipulating the image data of two different gels and using data from two different experiments, Dr. Obokata acted in a manner that can by no means be permitted. This cannot be explained solely by her immaturity as a researcher. Given the poor quality of her laboratory notes it has become clearly evident that it will be extremely difficult for anyone else to accurately trace or understand her experiments, and this, too, is considered a serious obstacle to healthy information exchange. Dr. Obokata’s actions and sloppy data management lead us to the conclusion that she sorely lacks, not only a sense of research ethics, but also integrity and humility as a scientific researcher.
What did Haruko Obokata do?
Obokata shot to prominence in January 2014 when she published two breakthrough articles in Nature , one of the world’s top science journals. She and her colleagues had demonstrated a surprisingly simple way of turning ordinary body cells – she used mouse blood cells – into something very much like embryonic stem cells.
Did Dr Obokata Act represent research misconduct?
The growing storm over Obokata’s research prompted Riken to launch an investigation into her work. At a press conference in Japan on Tuesday, the committee said it had found evidence of falsification and fabrication – offences that constitute research misconduct.
Do STAP cells exist?
Although it cannot be said with 100% certainty that STAP cells do not exist , Obokata is the only scientist claiming they are real. These “dream cells,” as they were introduced to the world, are widely thought to be the product of a young researcher at a major Japanese research institute.
What do you mean by pluripotency?
Definition. Pluripotency describes the ability of a cell to develop into the three primary germ cell layers of the early embryo and therefore into all cells of the adult body, but not extra-embryonic tissues such as the placenta.
Why is fabrication wrong?
Not only does fabrication affect scientific careers, but when fabricated data is presented to be real and is consequently used in real-life practice it can have life-threatening consequences. One case of research misconduct estimates that up to 800,000 lives were lost due to fabrication of data of a single perpetrator.
