Harshad Bhadeshia is one of the most popular and richest Engineer who was born on November 27, 1953 in Kenya, India. Sir Harshad Kumar Dharamshi Hansraj Bhadeshia FRS, FREng and FIMMM was born 27 November 1953. He is an Indian-British metallurgist who is also Tata Steel Professor of Metallurgy in the University of Cambridge.
He worked in the 90s with British Steel plc to develop a silicon-rich, carbide-free bainitic steel. This steel was later used for rails in Channel Tunnel. Later, it was used as a high-performance armour-steel for the British Ministry of Defence. He was presented with the Bessemer gold medal by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining in 2006 for his “outstanding service to the Steel Industry”. He was named the Tata Steel Professor of Metallurgy in November 2008. This was after Tata Steel donated the Chair to the University of Cambridge. He also established and led the “SKF University Technology Centre”, a joint venture between SKF, the University of Cambridge, to conduct research on the physical metallurgy of bearing-steels.
Bhadeshia was born in Kenya to Indian parents, who were carpenters. During the 19th century, many Indian workers emigrated to Kenya for building bridges, railway tracks, shops etc. Bhadeshia’s interest in science started when he visited the battery shop where his father worked. He was educated at the Kongoni Primary School followed by the Highway Secondary School, both in Nairobi.
He was the Founding Director of Computational Metallurgy Laboratory from 2005 to 2018. He also helped establish the Graduate Institute for Ferrous Technology (POSTECH) in the Republic of Korea.

In 1970, he moved to the United Kingdom with his family and became a technician at the British Oxygen Company’s metallurgical quality assurance laboratory. He was able to study part-time at East Ham College of Technology, London, in order to obtain the Ordinary National Certificate of Science. After that, he moved to Murex Welding Processes’ quality control laboratory. They sponsored him to attend City of London Polytechnic in 1976 where he received a Bachelor of Science degree. Professor Robert Honeycombe, at that time the External Examiner of the course at the Polytechnic, encouraged him to join his research team at the University of Cambridge. In 1980, he was admitted to Cambridge to study the significance and theory of retained austenite within steels. He received his PhD under the supervision of David V. Edmonds in Honeycombe’s Steel Research Group. The nature of austenite that is preserved depends on its previous phase transformations. As a student, he was interested in the choreography of austenite’s transformations during bainitic and martensitic phases.
After completing his PhD, he was a Science Research Council Research Fellow from 1981 to 1981. Since then, he has been part of Cambridge’s academic staff. He is the author of or co-author more than 650 papers in the field metallurgy, as well as several books.
The resources are archived as a permanent record by the British Library in an open access mode. For “outstanding teaching activities”, he was conferred the Adams Memorial Membership Award of the American Welding Society during 2007.
