He learned to play the guitar, the bouzouki, saz (stringed instruments), and the dhol (drums). Later, he formed a band called Erebouni. His mother, a singer, was the first to inspire his interest in music. Erebouni traveled from village to village, playing everything, from Deep Purple to Charles Aznavour, at weddings as well as universities. Harout and his entire family fled Soviet Armenia due to Soviet Union restrictions in 1975. After spending a year in Lebanon Harout moved to Los Angeles, where he settled down. He was blessed with one son, born in 1980.
One year after the Armenian earthquake of 1988, which left 25,000 dead and many others homeless, hundreds upon thousands of people sought temporary relief from the chaos. They crowded the Hrazdan stadium, Karen Demirchyan Complex, and listened to 28 Harout concerts.
