Martin was appointed senior vice president for academic affairs at The University of North Carolina General Administration in 2006. Martin was responsible for the development and execution of the University’s academic mission. This included teaching and research as well as student affairs.

In 2012, the Winston-Salem State University Board of Trustees approved the naming of new residence hall in honor of Martin and his predecessor, Alvin J. Schexnider, who served as chancellor of the university from 1996 until 2000.

Martin has been honored with numerous awards and recognition, on both a local and national level, over the span of his career. Those honors include the Thurgood Marshall College Fund’s Education Leadership Award in 2019, inclusion in the Ebony magazine Power 100 in 2015, selection as a Virginia Tech College of Engineering Distinguished Alumnus in 2010 and receipt of an Honorary Degree from Wake Forest University in 2007.

Martin was elected chancellor at Winston-Salem State University in 2000. The university saw nearly a double in enrollment under Martin’s leadership, going from 2,796 students to 5,556. The university’s freshman SAT scores increased nearly 70 points and the campus went through a major physical transformation, which was made possible by a $45 million Higher Education Bond Program. This bond program was launched in 2000. He is also known for establishing stronger working relationships between internal and external constituencies and launching programs that improve student retention rates and graduation rates.
