Haris Alexiou (Greek pronunciation: Kharis Alexiou ; born 27/12/50 in Thebes Greece as Hariklia Roupaka ; Greek pronunciation: Kharikleia Roupaka ) is a Greek singer. She is a popular singer in Greece, and has been a commercial success since the 1970s. She has collaborated with many important Greek composers and songwriters. She has also performed at the top musical theatres around the globe and received numerous awards. Her recordings include over 30 albums. She is also featured on the albums of other musicians. Alpha TV ranked Alexiou, the first female artist to be certified in Greece during the phonographic era (since 1960), Chart show: Your Countdown as Number 3. She also ranked third in terms of sales of personal albums that have been certified Gold or Platinum in Greek discography. This ranking was behind male singers Yiannis Parios and George Dalaras. The only female Greek singer to have sold more than 1.5 million copies of eight of her albums between 1977 and 2003, she is the only one.

Alexiou is a participant in the 1973 albums Kalimera ilie (“Good Morning, Sun”) by Manos Liizos and LefterisPapopoulos, Byzantinos Esperinos (“Byzantine Vesper”) by Apostolos Kaldaras, Lefteris Pagopoulos, and Odos Aristotelous (“Aristotelous Street”) by Yannis Spanos, and Lefteris Mamadopoulos. Manos Loizos’s introduction was the beginning of a long friendship and a productive cooperation.

In 1979, the album Ta tragoudia tis Haroulas (Haroula’s Songs) was released. Manos Loïzos had written the music and the lyrics were written by Manolis Rasoulis and Pythagoras (Pythagoras Papastamatiou). From this album, “o Fantaros” (“The Soldier”) immediately becomes a big hit, while “Ola se thymizoun” (“All Things Remind Me of You”) is considered one of the most beautiful Greek ballads of all time.

The 1980s start with two enormous hits: “Fevgo” (“I’m Leaving”) and “Ximeroni” (“The Day Breaks”). Songs of Yesterday, her album with Dimitra Galani includes ballads which fascinate the public. At the same time she records traditional and folk songs, rebetika and laika, and gives concerts both in Greece and abroad.

Her participation in the 1972 album Mikra Asia (“Asia Minor”), written by Apostolos Kadaras and Pythagoras Papastamatiou, was the first step in her career. This album was a landmark and the greatest hit of the ’70s. It is also included in “MinosEMI’s 100 Greatest Hits of the Century”.
