He assembled an international group of scientists from mathematics, neuroscience, medicine, basic research and microsystems to accomplish this goal.
He was a Neurosurgery specialist and completed his residency at Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz. He was habilitated in 1991 and taught at Hanover Medical School. Madjid Samii worked at Nordstadt Hospital in Hanover. He was appointed a professor of Neurosurgery at Westfalische Wilhelms-University, Munster in 1993.

Bothe studied Philosophy in Tubingen and Mainz from 1973 to 1981. He graduated in 1978 with Magister Artium in Philosophy. Later, he worked for three years at Cologne’s Max-Planck-Institute for Neurological Research. His PhD was awarded in 1983. The thesis: Artificial brain abcess in cats and therapy with antibiotics and steroids.
He founded the International Neurobionics Foundation in 1991 with Madjid Samii and Daniel Goeudevert. He was the executive director of the foundation from 1991 to 1995. With B. Fischer, J.W., he developed microelectronic implant to treat damaged retinas in blind patients (with B. Fischer).
