Hans van de Ven Biography

Hans van de Ven is one of the most popular and richest Linguist who was born on January 10, 1958 in Velsen, North Holland, Netherlands. Johan Hans van de Ven, born 10 January 1958 in Velsen, is an authority on 19th- and 20th-century Chinese history. At the University of Cambridge, he holds several positions, including Professor of Modern Chinese History, Director of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at St Catharine’s College, and previously as Chair of Faculty of Asian Studies and Middle Eastern Studies. Leiden University was where he studied sinology. After a short period of study with Susan Naquin at Penn, he transferred to Harvard University where he received his PhD.

Van de Ven is a visiting professor at Nanjing University’s History Department. He was also an International Fellow at China’s Hopkins-Nanjing Center in 2005-06. He was named an honorary visiting professor at Peking University’s Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences in 2019.
