Hamsalekha, born Govindaraju Gangaraju 23 June 1951, is an Indian film composer and songwriter. He has been working in South Indian cinema since the 1980s, mainly in the Kannada film sector. He is also a screenwriter, dialogue writer and instrumentalist, as well as a conductor. He has composed and written over 500 feature films.
Hamsalekha Desi Vidya Samsthe, a free education institution for SC/ST/underprivileged children, was founded in 2004-2005 to provide education for the 8th, 9th, and 10th grades in English. The teaching methods used were Drama, Dance, and Singing. In 2007-2008, an Arts College was established to offer Desi degree courses. A plot of land was allocated near Channapatna to create a Desi Degree Residential college. Hamsalekha also manages a music class where he mentors talented young singers.
After working on Premaloka, Hamsalekha became one of the most prolific music directors in Kannada film, with many hits. He made occasional use of many genres of music, including Western, pop, rock, hip hop, Indian classical, folk, ghazals, Sufi, and item songs. “Chandakinta Chanda”, a ghazal he composed for the film Sparsha, was a major hit. He has created songs ranging from the philosophical (“Le Le Marula” in Shaapa, a film whose story he wrote himself) to the naughty (“Kaayi Kaayi Nuggekaayi Mahimege” in Halli Maestru), the patriotic (“Huttidhare Kannada Nadalli Hutta Bekku” in Rajkumar’s Aakasmika, a song which has become an unofficial anthem of Karnataka) and love songs (“Ele Hombisile…” in Halunda Tavaru). He composed the background score for one movie using a single instrument and made the music for Kona Eedaite with no instruments at all. His music in the film Hagalu Vesha had a rustic and folk feel without the use of synthetic sounds. His music in the 2010 movie Naanu Nanna Kanasu was appreciated by critics as well as audiences. He also composed for the National Award-winning movie Puttakkana Highway in 2011.

Hamsalekha was married to Latha, a 1990s playback singer. They have two children, Tejaswini (the son) and Nandini (the daughters). Alankar is an actor and musician. Sugghi Tapori, Roja and Roja are just a few of the unreleased and released movies. Tejaswini has experience in film direction, acting, and directing plays. She earned her master’s degree in theater from Bangalore University and has directed many plays with her father Hamsalekha. Nandini started her career as a playback singer with the movie Sixer (2006).

Hamsalekha was born Govindaraju Gangaraju in Mandya, India. He was a student and then he joined Balakrishna, his brother’s orchestra group. He was a gifted poet and composer. Since he used to use a “Swan”, (Kannada: Hamsa), brand pen from Lavani Neelakantappa, his Guru, he renamed himself “Hamsalekhani”. His teacher changed his name to Hamsalekha later. M. N. Prasad introduced him to feature films and gave him the opportunity to compose a song for Triveni (1973). His first release was “Neena Bhagavantha”, which featured actor Udaykumar. Rahuchandra, his 1981 debut film as a musician, was his first film. Officially, his cinematic career began as a dialogue writer and lyricist for Naanu Nanna Hendthi (1985). His popularity rose only after he was paired with Ravichandran, an actor and director. Premaloka was released in 1987 and brought them together for a lasting collaboration that would last for more than 12 years.
His songs require a lot of vocal virtuosity. They have been recorded by many of India’s most respected singers and playback vocalists such as Dr. Rajkumar and P. B. Sreenivas. Some of his rare voices were recorded by him, such as M. Balamuralikrishna singing Muthina Haara (1990), C. Ashwath singing Hoovu Hannu (1993), and Pankaj Udhas singing Sparsha (2001).
Hamsalekha laid the foundation stone for Desi Music University on the day of Kannada Rajyotsava on 1 November 2010. The university will be built with ₹ 1.20 billion on 50 acres (200,000 m) of land in Mudhigere village near Channapatna in Karnataka. The Dravidian University of Andhra Pradesh has given recognition to this Hamsalekha College of Performing Arts.
