On December 12, 1989. Morris, Rodney Imes and Van Snyder were traded to the Cincinnati Reds along with pitcher Tim Leary. Morris attended Munster High School, Munster, Indiana and the University of Michigan. He was an all-Lake Suburban Conference tennis player four years, losing only one match in both his junior and senior seasons. He was also an all-Lake Suburban Conference basketball player his senior season, setting a school record for blocked shots and an all-Lake Suburban Conference baseball player three times. He was an Indiana Baseball All Star and was named MVP of the North-South All Star Game, Jasper, Indiana. In that series, he was 8-9. Morris was the captain of the Munster tennis, basketball and baseball teams during his senior season.
His Michigan teams won both the Big 10 Championships in 1984 and 1986. They also advanced to the College World Series 1984. While at Michigan, Morris set new records in slugging percentage as well as batting average.
