She was chosen to serve on the jury of the Un Certain Regard section at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.

In January 2019, Al-Mansour “received a Crystal Award at the World Economic Forum’s 2019 meeting in Davos for her leadership in cultural transformation in the Arab world.”

In April of 2020 it was announced that she would direct Netflix’s upcoming film “The Selection,” based on the first entry in Kiera Cass’ popular book series.

Al-Mansour directed A Storm in the Stars in 2014, a romantic drama film about Mary Shelley’s early years. Later, the film was renamed Mary Shelley and premiered at 2017 Toronto International Film Festival.

Haifaa al-Mansour (the eighth of twelve children) is the poet Abdul Rahman Mansour. He introduced her to movies by video since there were no theaters in Saudi Arabia between 1983-2018. Jackie Chan was one of her favorite actors. Although she is originally from Al Zulfi, she grew up in Al-Hasa.

Wadjda is her feature film debut. She wrote and directed the film. It was world premiered at the Venice Film Festival 2012; it’s the first feature- length feature shot entirely in Saudi Arabia, and the only feature-length movie made in Saudi Arabia in 2013 by a woman director. Wadjda is the story of Wadjda, a 10-year old girl who dreams of riding a bicycle and owning one. Rotana, Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal’s film production company, supported the film. Wadjda was chosen as the Saudi Arabian entry in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 86th Academy Awards. This is the first time that Saudi Arabia has submitted a film to the Best Foreign Language Oscar. The Gulf screenwriting lab was a collaboration between TorinoFilmLab (Dubai International Film Festival) and Wadjda. This project was developed in 2009.

She began her filmmaking career with three shorts, Who?, The Bitter Journey and The Only Way Out. The Only Way Out won prizes in the United Arab Emirates and in the Netherlands. She followed these with the documentary Women Without Shadows, which deals with the hidden lives of women in Arab States of the Persian Gulf. It was shown at 17 international festivals. The film received the Golden Dagger for Best Documentary in the Muscat Film Festival and a special jury mention in the fourth Arab Film Festival in Rotterdam. Haifaa al- Mansour was a guest at the 28th Three Continents Festival in Nantes, France.
