Gyanendra Deuja, born 5 May 1967 (Nepali jnyaanendr deujaa ), is a Nepali screenwriter and film director. In 1997, he directed Rakshak, his first movie. It was the first time that a Nepali movie featured an underwater action scene. Then he began to add a new element to each of his movies. Muna Madan (Nepali pronunciation: munaamdn) is one of his most notable movies. It was based on the long poem by Laxmi Prasad devkota. This film was Nepal’s entry for Best Foreign Language Film at 2004 Oscars. He was currently filming his latest film, Buddha, in Nepal. It tells the story of a struggling student from Nepal.
Rakshak (1997), his first venture as a director, featured scenes under water. This was a novel feature in Nepali Cinema. His movies have earned him a reputation for being innovative. His films often focus on current social issues. Rakshak’s portrayal of maoist issues during Maoist insurgency was controversial. Gorkhali, Dagbatti and others followed the movie in the late nineties/early 2000s. He then made Muna Madan, which was based on a love poem by Lakshmi Prasad Devkota. (Nepali : mhaakvi?lkssmiiprsaad Devkottaa). It was chosen as Nepal’s entry in the “Best Foreign Language Movie” category of the 76th Academy Awards 2004. It was also shown at the Palm Springs Film Festival in 2004.
