Birth Year 1990

Gyaincain Norbu is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on February 13, 1990 in Lhari County, People's Republic of China. Sengchen Lobsang Kyaltsen replaced Chadrel on the search committee. The Panchen Lama was selected by the new search committee from a shortlist of finalists. They did this by drawing lots from a Golden Urn. The Qianlong Emperor introduced the Chinese custom of using the Golden Urn in 1792. It was used to select the 10th and 11th Dalai lamas. According to the China Tibet Information Center, the 10th Panchen Lama asked that the Golden Urn process used to choose his successor four days before his death. Arjia Rinpoche, a prominent lama, said that Ye Xiaowen (central government official responsible for the Panchen Lama issue) claimed privately that the selection was rigged in favor Gyaincain norbu.

Chadrel Rinpoche was the head of the Panchen Lama search committee in China at the time and was able secretly to communicate with the Dalai Lama. He had planned to submit to the government the Dalai Lama’s preferred choice. The government discovered this and arrested Chadrel on May 25, 1995. To pre-empt China’s choice, the Dalai Lama declared Gedhun Choekyi Niima his preferred candidate as the 11th Panchen Lama. He was taken from his Lhari County home by Chinese security forces four days later. They stated that he “was in danger of being kidnapped” by Tibetan separatists. China denies Nyima was “arbitrarily” selected, but the Tibetan government exile insists on Nyima’s legitimacy.

On 14 September, 2010, the foreign minister of Singapore, George Yeo, became the first foreign member of government to meet officially with Gyaincain Norbu, at the Xihuang Monastery in Beijing.

On May 2010, he reported to the ethnically Tibetan earthquake zone of the 2010 Yushu earthquake and held prayer services for victims. In June, he gave speeches at Tibet University and Tibet University of Traditional Tibetan Medicine in Lhasa promoting the value of education. In response to the 2010 Gansu mudslide, in which Zhugqu County, a third of which is populated by Tibetans, was hit, he donated ¥50,000 to relief efforts and prayed for the victims. He pays visits to the Tashilhunpo Monastery, the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, although he does not live there. The Asia Times describes him as “A slight man who wears thick glasses and traditional crimson robes”.

Gyaincain, a six-year-old girl, was chosen on December 8, 1995 under the religious name Qoigyijabu. Arjia Rinpoche an exile Tibetan abbot, claims that a official informed him that Norbu was the beneficiary of the ceremony. Gyaincain norbu was enthroned in Tashilhunpo Monastery. He has since assumed all the functions of Panchen Lama. The 8th Arjia Rinpoche was present at the enthronement. He wrote that “we had to prostrate before the so-called Panchen Lama…we didn’t have the respect nor faith in this chosen child… This gesture made me feel dirty.

Gyaincain norbu was born in Lhari County, northern Tibet Autonomous Region on 13 February 1990. He had lived in Beijing in his childhood, but he wanted to learn Chinese. After his education, he moved to Tashilhunpo Monastery in Shigatse to be enthroned. He has been studying Tibetan Buddhism since he was selected as Panchen Lama. At ten, he added Tibetan language and sutra to his studies. He is also bilingual in Tibetan and Chinese. He spent the majority of his childhood in Beijing studying Buddhism. Norbu, in a rare appearance given his adolescent years, delivered a speech about Buddhism and national unity at the opening ceremony for the 2006 World Buddhist Forum. According to reports, the speech received a cold reception from delegates. Gyaltsen Norbu was not even invited by fellow Buddhists during greeting ceremonies prior to Wednesday’s conference. Tenzin Gyatso the 14th Dalai Lama was not invited because he is considered by China to be a “long-time stubborn separatist who has attempted to break the unity between different ethnic groups and split his Chinese motherland.”

Two years later, in 2008, he denounced anti-Han riots in Lhasa, saying “We resolutely oppose all activities to split the country and undermine ethnic unity”. China promotes him as “the public face of Tibetan Buddhism”.
