Guy Verhofstadt is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on April 11, 1953 in Dendermonde, Flemish Region, Belgium. He was born in Dendermonde in 1953 and became the president of the Liberal Flemish Student’s Union (1972-1974), while he was studying law at the University of Ghent. He was quickly elected secretary to Willy De Clercq (the president of the Flemish Liberal Party (PVV)). He was 29 years old when he became the president of the party. He was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1985 and became Deputy Prime Minster and Minister of Budget under Prime minister Wilfried Martens. His economic views and young age earned him the nickname “Baby Thatcher”.
The VLD was the largest party in Flanders partly due to a food scandal which occurred just before 1999 elections. He quickly formed a coalition (a symmetric alliance) with the Flemish greens, socialists, and French-speaking counterparts of the parties in Brussels and Wallonia. On 12 July 1999, he was elected Prime Minister. This is the first liberal to be appointed to that office since 1938. It was the first Belgian government to be without a Christian Democratic Party since 1958 and also the first to include green parties.
Various governments were pressing for the abolition of the law of universal competence (also known as the “genocide law”), which gave Belgian judges the authority to accuse and sentence non-Belgians with crimes against humanity. Accusations that were made had rarely been followed up, and were often dismissed as being little more than politically motivated international insults. Verhofstadt’s second government was sworn in on 12 July 2003, with both coalition partners having agreed to abolish the so-called “genocide law” and replace it with a much weaker one.
Following the 2003 general elections, Verhofstadt formed his second cabinet without the green parties, who were virtually annihilated in the election. For various reasons, the formation of the second government was delayed well beyond normal: the economic situation worsened to 1999 levels, both politically similar parties (liberals and socialists) gained approximately the same seats.
The party failed to surpass the CVP despite high expectations. Verhofstadt quit and vanished from the political scene. However, he returned to the presidency of the party in 1997 with a more moderate image. Partly due to the influence of Dirk, his brother and a social-liberal political philosopher, Verhofstadt gradually moved away neoliberalism, becoming more centrist, which was especially evident during his first term in office as Prime Minister.

Guy Maurice Marie Louise Verhofstadt, (Dutch pronunciation: [‘gi] v@r’hofstat] (listen ) ; French pronunciation: [gi] v@Rofstad]; was born 11 April 1953. He is a Belgian politician and was the Leader of Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (MEP) since 2009. From 1999 to 2008, he was the 47th Prime Minster of Belgium. He also served as Deputy Prime Minister for Belgium (1985-1992) and Minister of Budget (1985-1992). From 1985 to 2009, he was a member of the Chamber of Representatives.
He was expelled from the government and became the leader of opposition. After an unsuccessful attempt to form a government, he transformed the PVV into Flemish Liberals and Democrats in November 1991. Many politicians from other parties joined this new party, including the Volksunie and Christian People’s Party.
Verhofstadt was awarded the Vision for Europe Award in 2002 for his work toward a more unified Europe. The economic situation gave him leeway to raise the lowest social alimonies and lowering taxation. After 2001, the economic situation worsened. The ‘Aging Fund’ or ‘Silver Fund’ was set up, in order to ensure the maintenance of pensions until 2030. But despite his efforts to boost the economy while attempting to maintain the social benefits system, unemployment rose, after previously falling during the second Dehaene cabinet.

Following the DHL crisis, Verhofstadt faced a crisis over the allocation of constitutional and administrative powers and responsibilities for the Brussels-Halle-Vilvoorde district (commonly abbreviated as BHV). Division of the powers had been written into the government coalition agreement by the parties controlling the Flemish regional government. This triggered a veto from the Walloon parties. The crisis dragged on until spring 2005 when the matter was shelved till after the federal elections of 2007. By 2005 the Flemish parties participating in the government did not want the government to collapse, given their poor ratings in the opinion polls.
