The Last Crossing, (2002), a national bestseller, won the Saskatoon Book Award and the Saskatchewan Book Awards for Fiction, Book of the year, and the Canadian Booksellers Association Libris Award for Fiction Book of the year. Canada Reads 2004 selected the novel as the book to be read by every Canadian.

Vanderhaeghe currently lives in Saskatoon. He teaches creative writing as an evening class at St. Thomas Moore College at the University of Saskatchewan. His wife Margaret Elizabeth Vanderhaeghe, a noted artist, died in 2012.

In 2013, he received the Lieutenant Governor’s Arts Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts, Saskatchewan’s highest honour in the arts.

Vanderhaeghe’s debut book, Man Descending (1982), won a Governor General’s Award as well as the United Kingdom’s Faber Prize. The Englishman’s Boy (1996), his second novel, won him the Governor General’s Award for Fiction, the Saskatchewan Book Award for Fiction, and the Saskatchewan Book Award for Fiction. It was also shortlisted for the Giller Prize as well as the International Dublin Literary Award.

Guy Clarence Vanderhaeghe (OC, SOM) was born April 5, 1951. He is a Canadian novelist, short story writer and poet. His Western novels trilogy, The Englishman’s Boy and The Last Crossing are well-known. Vanderhaeghe won three Governor General’s Awards in fiction. One for his short stories collection Man Descending, in 1982; the second for The Englishman’s Boy, in 1996; and the third for Daddy Lenin, and other Stories, in 2015.

He was a freelance writer, editor and teacher of English and history at Herbert High School, Herbert, Saskatchewan from 1975 to 1977. He was Writer in Residence at the Saskatoon Public Library in 1983 and 1984, and Writer- in–Residence at University of Ottawa in 1985. He was a visiting professor of creative writing at the University of Ottawa (1985-1986), faculty member of Banff Centre of the Arts’ Writing Program (1990-91), and faculty member responsible for senior fiction students in SAGE Hills Creative Writing Program (92). He has been a visiting professor of English at St. Thomas More College, University of Saskatchewan since 1993.

In 2003, Vanderhaeghe was awarded the Saskatchewan Order of Merit and was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. His 2011 publication of A Good Man finished off his Western trilogy. “Historically spot on, the characters (fictional and real) are incredible and the plot builds to an incredible bitter sweet ending.”
