He attended St John’s College in Portsmouth, and Ampleforth College. He studied Applied Psychology at Durham University, and then received a Masters of Psychology from Newcastle University. He was then certified as a psychologist by The Royal Hospital in London.
He was also a judge in the 2019 Waterstones Sun Story Award. Camden Afterlife is his next novel. It is about a teenager who struggles to overcome the loss of his sister. At the University of Lincoln, he teaches Creative Writing. Zer0 Books (John Hunt Publishing), is publishing his first non-fiction book, ‘Albion’s Secret History : Snapshots from England’s Pop Rebels & Outsiders’. It’s been described by him as a “poison pen love note to England”.
New Books Magazine described Mankowski’s second novel Letters from Yelena as having “shades” of The Red Shoes, and The Black Swan. Mankowski was granted Arts Council funding for the novel, which allowed him to access the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet Saint Petersburg for research. Dora Frankel, choreographer, created a dance that was inspired by the book. Osiris Educational used a portion of the novel as GCSE training material. As part of his PhD, he wrote How I Left The National Grid. His research used the theory of Self-fashioning in the punk movement and re-appropriated it as’self design’. Mankowski interviewed members of the post-punk band Savages while researching the book. The Huffington Post said that Mankowski captured brilliantly the psychology behind fan obsession. Richey Edwards was depicted in the novel in a book that examines Edwards’ contribution in making The Holy Bible, the third Manic Street Preachers album.
