He is currently the third fastest 800m Scottish athlete, behind Jake Wightman and Tom McKean. Learmonth finished 6th at both the 2015 European Indoor Championships and the 2014 Commonwealth Games final. Guy holds the English AAA U20 Indoor & BUCS Championship records and has broken the Scottish 800m Junior Record nine times.
He won his third 800m title at the BUCS Indoor Championships in 2014. He won the Indoor Glasgow International Match, winning a 600m race that was rarely run in a time 1:16:48. In the process, he also broke the Scottish 600m record, which had been held for 40 year. Learmonth participated in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, achieving 6th in the 800m final in a personal record time of 1:46.69. By qualifying as the fastest loser in the heats, he was able to secure the third automatic qualifying spot for his semi-final. He is now two hundredths off a second ahead of the rest.
In 2016, he won a bronze medal, coming third at the British Indoor Championships in the 800 metres. Similarly, in 2017 Learmonth was crowned British Indoor Champion, and also won a silver medal in the British Outdoor Championships. Shortly after, Learmonth competed in the London Anniversary Games where he achieved a lifetime beat of 1:45.77 and the qualifying standard for the London World Championshils in August 2017.
In the 2019 Indoor European Championships Learmonth tried to go through a non- existent gap up the inside of Mark English, hampering the Irish athlete, in the 800m semi final, and was subsequantly disqualified, with English promoted to the final on appeal. Indeed, Learmonth’s previous two runs had been shrouded in controversy, as firstly he was promoted from 3rd place to 2nd in the British Trials for the 800m, after the disqualification of Jamie Webb, for “track contact” on Learmonth. and secondly, Learmonth fell in the 800m in Birmingham at the Muller Indoor Grand Prix and proceeded to punch the track in anger and broke his hand.
He did not defend his 800m titles at the indoor or outdoor BUCS Championships in 2013. Instead, he attempted the 1500m at the outdoor championships. This was the first time he had raced that distance. He won his heat and finished fourth in his semi-final. He won a bronze medal at the British Indoor Championships.

Guy Learmonth was the first major athlete to compete in the 2011 European Athletics Junior Championships. He won his heat in the 800m event. He finished fifth in his semi-final.
