Guro Fjellanger Biography

Guro Fjellanger is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on January 26, 1964 in Bergen, Norway. Guro Fjellanger (26 January 1964 16 April 2019,) was Guro Fjellanger (26 January 1964 – 16 April 2019) was a Norwegian politician of the Liberal Party. She was Minister of the Environment during the first Bondevik cabinet between 1997 and 2000. She was a consultant for a private company and board member of numerous government agencies and institutions as well as she was a member of two government appointed commissions.

Following the 1997 general elections in which Magne Bondevik formed the first Cabinet, Fjellanger was appointed as Minister of the Environment. On April 29, 1998 Fjellanger signed the Kyoto Protocol on behalf of Norway. She resigned from the cabinet after the Bondevik government was defeated by an election of confidence on March 20, 2000. The same year, she quit as the deputy leader of the Liberal Party.

Guro Fjellanger was born with spina bifida, a dysfunction of the spinal cord which inhibits normal walking. She learned to walk to a certain degree, she later used a wheelchair exclusively. When she became Minister of the Environment she became the first Norwegian government minister with a disability. In 2007 she notably won a lawsuit against the state, who in 2004 had refused to grant her insurance coverage with Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

In a November 2018 op-ed for Dagbladet, Fjellanger wrote that she has “not been constantly, seriously ill for the past 54 years though [she has] lived with spina bifida.” She revealed that she had cancer and recently contracted serious infections and atrial fibrillation. She died on 16 April 2019, aged 55.

In 1994, Fjellanger was elected to the Central Committee of the Liberal Party. She was the party’s information director in the year 1995 and served as vice president in the liberal party between 1996 until 2000. In 1996, she also served briefly as a director for the Norwegian Society for the Conservation of Nature.

Fjellanger is born in Bergen as the daughter of Hakon Fjellanger Professor Hakon Fjellanger and Jorunn Carlsen who was an interior decorator. She was raised in Stokmarknes and completed her high school at the age of 1984. Later, she earned a master’s diploma in history from Norway’s University of Oslo in 1990.

As of 1985 Fjellanger got the post of secretary to The Young Liberals, the youth section of the Liberal Party. From 1986 until 1988, she was the president of the group. From 1988 to 1990, she was appointed vice-president of the group Nei til EU, which is opposed to Norwegian membership within the European Union. She then served as secretary general between 1991 and 1995.

From 2002 to 2004 she was the director of the Norwegian Centre Against Ethnic Discrimination, a government agency. She was a member of the board of the Norwegian Organization for Asylum Seekers from 1996 to 1997, and was chair of the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (2001–2007) and Ecolabelling Norway from 2004. Fjellanger was also a board member of the Norwegian Consumer Council (2008–2012) and the Oslo University Hospital from 2011. She was President of the Forum for Women and Development (2014–2016) and a member of the city council of Oslo from 2007 to 2015.
