Guor Marial is one of the most popular and richest Marathon Runner who was born on April 15, 1984 in Sudan, South Sudan. Marial placed 47th during the marathon, running 2:19:32 for his time. His personal record is 2:12 minutes.

He was a participant at the 2012 Olympics with his new name of Marial that was the name of his uncle. However the name has since been changed to his birth name.

Maker became an Airman in the United States Air Force on 2 February 2018. He was selected for the United States Air Force World Class Athlete Program.

Marial completed the required A-qualification to run the race in October of 2011 which allowed him to compete at the Olympic marathon during 2012 Summer Olympics. Marial’s story was described as “unique” by the IOC because prior to the Olympics, South Sudan had yet to create an official National Olympic Committee and seek full recognition from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) this would have allowed South Sudan to field teams and take part with the national flag of South Sudan. The South Sudanese have permanent residency within United States. United States, but not citizenship. According to his interview with Runner’s World, He applied for naturalization in order to become an U.S. citizen in 2011 and attended his naturalization test however, his application is in the process: “Technically, I was supposed to be a citizen last June, because I did everything, I did my citizen test, I did my interview, I did my fingerprint, and everything was all set. All I needed to do was go to their office and get my passport and do the ceremony. That was in June 2011, but there has been a security background check…and that’s what took everything longer.”

Guor Mading Maker (born 15 April 1984) is also called Guor Marial Guor Mading Maker, is an South Sudanese track and field athlete. Guor Mading Maker is also a Dinka tribesman.

Maker left his home at seven and moved in with his uncle in the northern region of Sudan. In 1994 at the age nine, he escaped from an asylum camp at the time of the Sudanese Civil War. Although the family of 28 were killed in the war however, he was able to flee to Egypt after which he was able to return permanently in his home in the United States. The refugee was recognized in authorities in the United States when he was 16and is a resident and trainer at Flagstaff, Arizona. While his parents escaped during the war in South Sudan, by when he attended the 2012 Olympics the athlete had not seen them for 20 years. But he went back in South Sudan in 2013 and was returned to his parents. Eight of his sisters and brothers were killed during the war.

Maker competed in the men’s marathon at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Due to civil war that saw South Sudan split from Sudan, he has refused to compete under the flag of the latter, stating that, “It would be betraying my people”. He was one of four athletes competing in the 2012 Summer Olympics under the Olympic flag rather than that of an individual country.
