He was born in Karlskrona, Sweden, the son of a teacher Ake Karlson along with his partner Gun (nee Simonsson). In his time in the Cold War in the 1970s and 1980s, he became involved with the left-wing. Karlson was a member of the student body at the school, and was a sympathizer of the Left-Party Communists (VPK) however, he was not an active member. His experiences later led to some curiosity from his colleagues as a young officer with the regiment in Vaxjo. Karlson was able to pass the student examination at Vaxjo gym in the year 1977. He went to his time at the Military Academy Karlberg from 1977 until the year 1980. He was appointed lieutenant in the Kronoberg Regiment (I 11) in 1980 . He was also the deputy infantry platoon leader from 1980 until 1982. Karlsson was a student at his Service Branch School (Truppslagsskola) for officers of regimentals between 1982 and 1983. In 1983, his rank was elevated to captain. Karlson went to his Swedish Armed Forces Language School (Forsvarets tolkskola) from 1983 until 1984.

Karlson was the head of Section 1 of the Eastern Army Division’s staff from 1996 until 1998, and was the brigade’s deputy commander of the Smaland Brigade from 1998 to 2000 when he was elevated to colonel. Karlson was the deputy representative of the military for the Mission of Sweden to NATO from 2000 until 2003, and commander for the Gotland Regiment (P 18) from 2003 until 2005. In 2006, he finished Sweden Defence University’s course in Solbacka as well as in 2007, was a part of Sweden Defence University’s Higher Management Course. In 2007, he was elevated to the rank of brigadier general. Karlson was a military advisor for the Ministry for Foreign Affairs from the year 2008 to 2009, and he also finished his European Security and Defence High Level Course at the European Security and Defence College during the same time. In 2009, he was promoted to the rank of major general. Karlson was the an assistant director at the Swedish Armed Forces Training and Procurement Director of Training from 2009 to 4 June 2012, when Karlson assumed the role of the head of restructuring until October of the same year, when he was named director for the Swedish Military Intelligence and Security Service (MUST). Karlson quit in April of this year.

In 2003, he was married to artist Anette Lovgren (born 1963 in Vaxjo) and is the daughter of the Tinsmith Allan Lovgren and Rut Lovgren.

Major General Gunnar Ake Karlson (born 7 April 1958) is a retired Swedish Army officer. Karlson’s most prestigious posts include commander of the regimental of Gotland Regiment, chief of Training and Procurement and director of the Swedish Military Intelligence and Security Service. Karlson retired from active service in April, 2019.

He was the deputy study director for the Swedish Infantry Combat School from 1984 to 1985 , and served as an infantry platoon leader between 1985 and 1986. Karlson attended the general course in the Swedish Armed Forces Staff College from 1986 until 1987. He was the infantry company commander for Dalarna Regiment (I 13) from 1987 to 1988 at which point Karlson was promoted to major. Karlson completed Sweden’s Armed Forces Staff College’s two-year advanced staff training from 1988 until 1990. He was also the chief instructor of tactics for the Infantry Combat School from 1990 until 1991. Karlson later served as an officer of the staff in the Army Staff from 1991 to 1993, as well as the assistant chief of staff for Nordbat 2 from 1993 to 1994. This formed part of the United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR) in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 1994, he also made lieutenant colonel. Karlson was a teacher at Sweden’s Armed Forces Staff College’s two-year management course from 1994 until 1995. He was also the deputy head of Organization for Security and Co- operation in Europe (OSCE) Assistance Group to Chechnya from 1995 until 1996.
