Gular Ahmadova is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on August 20, 1965 in Baku, Azerbaijan. Gular Mikayil Qizi Ahmadova (Azerbaijani Gul@r @hm@dova) Gul@r @hm@dova, also known as Aliyeva (born 20 August 1965 in Baku) is a former Azerbaijani politician who was a an ex-member of National Assembly of Azerbaijan and former member of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party. The politician gained fame in 2012 when a film made with an unidentified camera was released that showed Ahmadova engaging in a bribe deal along with attorney and party member Elshad Abdullayev to assist in arranging for, among other things, an election for parliament. The corruption scandal that followed was dubbed Gulargate (by similarity to Gulargate, in a similar way to the Watergate scandal) and resulted in Ahmadova’s resignation as a member of parliament, and then being detained and removed out of her party. She was sentenced to 3 year in jail for embezzlement as well as inability to report a serious offense however, her sentence was suspended for 14 months following the sentence.
While in her Parliamentary membership during her time in parliament, she was an uncompromising critic of the opposition and colleagues from the ruling party, and claimed to be “a Heydar Aliyev follower”. In an interview in 2006, she alleged that the recently fired and detained the Health Minister Ali Insanov of giving Azerbaijani children up for adoption illegally in other countries.
She was known as an advocate for children’s rights and one of the few members of parliament who openly voiced their concern with regard to the frequent non- combat deaths among new conscripts in the Azerbaijani army in the early 2010s. She was also known to have opposed the passing of a law decriminalizing libel, stating that it would encourage vigilante justice.
On the night of 28 October 2011, editor-in-chief of the newspaper Khural Avaz Zeynally was arrested after Gular Ahmadova submitted audio materials to the police alleging that Zeynally had been blackmailing her for 10,000 AZN in return for not publishing controversial material about Ahmadova’s corruption activity (which later became known as the Gulargate scandal). Zeynally claimed that the voice on the recording did not belong to him. He accused Ahmadova of brokering his persecution by the state. After the release of the first Gulargate video, Zeynally said there were obvious parallels between his case and the scandal. A member from the New Azerbaijan Party, which is in power in Azerbaijan for the last three years, Gular Ahmadova decisively won seats in the National Assembly in three consecutive elections to the parliamentary chamber in the years 2000, 2005 and in 2010 as a representative of in the Yasamal I and lately Khatai II constituency. In a video recorded by a hidden camera that was released during the Gulargate scandal Ahmadova’s friend Sevinj Babayeva said that in 2005, the Director of the Presidential Administration Ramiz Mehdiyev arranged for police groups to go to Ahmadova’s electoral district to “take measures” to secure her victory. The claim has been confirmed later by her opponent Eldar Namazov, who claimed that his supporters in ten polling stations were attacked by the police , with their protocols were shattered. The issue was not addressed following Ahmadova’s arrest.

Ahmadova met her husband , Fikrat Ahmadov, at college and they were married in the year 1985. There are three of them. Fikrat Ahmadov was the head of the department of advertising for AzTV, the national broadcaster AzTV between 1995 and 2012. Ahmadova’s father came located in Nardaran close to Baku and her mother is a is a native of Shamakhy. In 1986 she graduated with distinction in the Azerbaijan State Pedagogical Institute with the degree of mathematics. Over the next seven years that followed, she served as an instructor and vice-principal in different educational institutions. Ahmadova has a master’s degree in psychology. The university she taught in was Baku State University until her arrest. 1994 was the year that marked the beginning in her civil service career. she was hired as a member of the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Azerbaijan initially as the chief trainer and later as the director of a department and eventually the head of administration. The year 1996 was the time she was elected the chairperson of the Children’s Organization of Azerbaijan.
On 18 April 2009, Ahmadova was physically assaulted by two unnamed females who showed up at her house late in the evening. The incident was reported to the police, but Ahmadova refused to comment on it. The police told the media that the incident was property-related.

According to Ahmadova’s lawyers, her physical and psychological state deteriorated while in custody. She refused to give any testimony till Elshad Abdullayev was tried, and alleged the videos had been edited. She was found guilty on all counts and on 2 December 2013 sentenced to three years in custody. The relatively mild verdict was ruled considering the fact that Ahmadova had previously had a clear criminal record, had been three-time elected parliament member, had engaged in charitable work, was suffering from unnamed health conditions and was a parent of an underage child. In January 2014, the Baku Court of Appeal upheld this decision.
