Grzegorz Juliusz Schetyna (Polish pronunciation: [‘gzegos ‘ sxe’tina(listen) ( listen ) ) born on 18 February 1963) is a Polish politician who served as the Leader of the Civic Platform and Leader of the Opposition from January 26th, 2016 until 25 January 2020. He was Secretary of Foreign Affairs in Poland from 2014 until 2015 and The Marshal of Sejm from 2010 until the year 2011, acting President of Poland in 2010, Vice-Prime Minister for Poland from 2007 until 2009, and Minister of the Interior and Administration 2007 to 2009. He has been a member of the Sejm since 1997.

Schetyna was the first person elected in the Sejm as a candidate for the Freedom Union in the national elections of the 21st of September in 1997. He received 13 013 (3,17 percent) in the 50 Wroclaw district. After the 2007 parliamentary elections Schetyna was the Deputy Prime Minister, and then Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration under the Prime Secretary Donald Tusk. As the interior minister, he pushed for the desperately needed improvement of the roads in the provinces in Poland. In the 2009 cabinet reshuffle and resignation from the government, he resigned abruptly, amid tensions between his group in the government’s political ruling Civic Platform party and Tusk.

Following Bronisław Komorowski’s victory in the 2010 presidential election, Schetyna was nominated as the Civic Platform’s candidate to succeed the President-elect as the Marshal of the Sejm.

Schetyna ceased being Sejm Marshal on 8 November 2011; Ewa Kopacz replaced him and later took his job as the Civic Platform’s first deputy leader.

Schetyna has also been a part of Sejm 1997-2001 Sejm 2001-2005 Sejm 2005-2007 Sejm 2007-2011.

In the mid-80s, Schetyna headed the University of Wroclaw’s branch of Independent Student Union (ISA), which is the student arm of Solidarnosc (Solidarity) trade union movement. She was later in several posts with the Liberal-Democratic Congress and then the Freedom Union party in the 1990s, as did Donald Tusk and several other important leaders in Polish political life. When Tusk founded the Civic Platform in 2001, Schetyna was elected secretary- general.

In February 2015, Schetyna announced that Poland would be the first country to pay damages for participating in the US Central Intelligence Agency’s secret rendition program after it was found to have hosted a facility used for illegal rendition and interrogation.
